In 2007 I wrote the following article for an Arabic quarterly. As a member of the Holland Committee on Southern Africa I participated in campaigns in support of the liberation movements in Southern Africa. There are striking similarities in the way black South Africans and Palestinians were and are systematically excluded by respectively the white South African apartheid regime and the Israeli regime. The comparison between apartheid South Africa and Israel boils down to flagrant violations of international law and human rights. The institutionalized, systematic way Israel denies and violates the rights of Palestinians and the Israeli policies of segregation are similar to the methods the South African apartheid regime.

In October Haq Al-Awda published an article I wrote with Bangani Ngeleza. We compare institutional racism in apartheid South Africa and Israel. The similarities turned out to be striking. Successive governments in Israel and South Africa developed since 1948 a system of laws and policies that encroached deeply in the lives of the indigenous population in the domain of possession of land and property, residency, marriage and family life, work, education, and health. Recently, Hajo Meyer published a remarkable booklet to counteract the conscious abuse of the terms anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism by the State of Israel and its umbrella organizations. As a consequence, people are reluctant to criticize Israel's behaviour. Israel's violations of international law and the ongoing collective punishment of the people in Gaza should in Meyer's view be criticized, and he is appalled by the incapacity of the European Union to hold Israel to account.

In August, the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre, the international watchdog organization, asked three Israeli companies to respond to a report by an Israeli non-governmental organization that protested the treatment of Palestinian workers at West Bank settlement industrial parks. Kav LaOved, which is concerned with the rights of migrant and Palestinian workers employed in Israel and Israel's illegal settlements, reported on the rising number of claims by Palestinian workers employed in West Bank settlements following an October 2007 Israeli high court ruling that the country's labor laws applied in the settlements.

Op 25 april 2008 verscheen het boek 'Niet iedereen kan stenen gooien' van Arjan El Fassed, een van de oprichters van de internationaal gerespecteerde nieuwswebsite The Electronic Intifada.Zijn boek is geschreven ter herinnering aan zijn vorige maand overleden oom Salim Radi el Fasid , en opgedragen aan zijn twee kinderen. Arjan laat met zijn boek zien dat hij diep verbonden is met Palestina. Hij vertelt over de geschiedenis van het Palestijnse volk aan de hand van zijn familiegeschiedenis in een persoonlijke, ontroerende en spannende stijl. Ik heb het boek met veel plezier en grote interesse gelezen.
